Fillings remove decay and replace the affected tooth structure. It is called a filling because new material fills the hole that the decay left. Most teeth are treated with bonded tooth colored composite resin fillings to match the existing teeth. If caught early, cavities can be treated easily and painlessly. If the decay is left untreated, decay can lead to tooth pain and infection. The tooth would then require root canal treatment or extraction.
